Neighborhoods learning from Neighborhoods

The Radius Project seeks nominations of people who contribute to the well-being and health of their neighborhood. We then produce a short film and invite the surrounding communities to a screening about how their work has enriched their neighborhood—and beyond. TRP is interested in collaborations between communities.

How does this service interconnect the neighborhoods?

We use films to start conversations that connect people, groups, and neighborhoods. We want to associate the name of a neighborhood with a destination of constructive exploration, discovery, teaching, and learning. The Radius Project reimagines the positive history of a neighborhood as a potential campus for informal teaching and learning experiences.

Key Factors Influencing What People Learn: Neighborhood Health:

  • Built Environment: Availability of sidewalks, bike lanes, parks, and clean air/water directly correlates to elevated physical activity levels.

  • Food Environment: Easy access to fresh, affordable, and nutritious food reduces obesity risks and improves local health outcomes.

  • Safety & Stability: Elevated community engagement lowers levels of crime and violence, along with safe housing free from hazards (e.g., lead), reduces stress and trauma.

  • Social & Economic Factors: our films elevate strong social connectedness, trust among neighbors, and economic opportunities, which improve mental health and well-being.

Long-term Interventions to Improve Neighborhood Health:

  • Our Films include Increasing Connectivity: through developing sidewalks for touring our imaginative accomplishments, walking trails, and expanding public transit access.

  • Enhancing Community Spaces: Creating community gardens, increasing green space, and establishing farmers’ markets.

  • Public Policy: Implementing zoning laws that reduce the density of fast-food restaurants and improve air quality.

  • Community Engagement: Fostering community planning meetings to allow residents to shape their environment.

The Radius Project events create engaging and informative forums where families, educators, and community residents can come together to learn about local efforts, initiatives, and achievements, blended with actual impact, aka testimonials, data, and follow-up reports

These gatherings highlight the work of individuals and organizations whose dedication and innovation help shape the community and inspire the examples that future generations will follow.
